Your Reality Doesn’t Have to Become Mine

One thing I’ve been learning lately is that people don’t just give advice, they often give you their fears disguised as wisdom.
Sometimes it sounds like concern.
“Be realistic.”
“That probably won’t work.”
“I’ve tried that before.”
“You should have a backup plan.”
And while some advice comes from a genuine place of love, I’ve realized something important:
Just because something happened to someone else doesn’t mean it’s destined to happen to me.
We all experience life through different lenses. Our childhoods are different. Our opportunities are different. Our support systems are different. Even the way we respond to setbacks is different. So
why would I assume our outcomes have to be the same?
I’ve had people tell me entrepreneurship is too risky.
I’ve heard people say making a living from creativity isn’t sustainable. I’ve listened to stories about dreams that didn’t work out, businesses that failed, and opportunities that never came. Those stories are real. They deserve to be respected. But they don’t have to become my story. I can have compassion for someone else’s experience without accepting it as my future. That’s something I’ve had to remind myself over and over again. Sometimes people aren’t trying to discourage you on purpose. They’re trying to protect you from the pain they experienced. They don’t want you to get hurt the way they did.
I understand that.
But protection can sometimes sound a lot like limitation. If every generation accepted the limits of the one before it, nothing new would ever exist.
Someone had to believe they could build a business.
Someone had to believe they could invent something different. Someone had to believe they could create a life that didn’t look like everyone else’s. Progress has always belonged to the people who were willing to imagine a different outcome.
For me, faith reminds me not to confuse someone else’s experience with my own calling. That doesn’t mean I ignore wise advice or pretend challenges don’t exist. It means I listen carefully, learn what I can, and then make decisions based on the path I’m called to walk—not the fear someone else had to carry.
Maybe your confidence comes from your faith.
Maybe it comes from your purpose.
Maybe it’s simply the quiet belief that your life doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Whatever keeps you moving forward, don’t let someone else’s past become the ceiling over your future.
Their experience is valid. Your journey is valid too.
You don’t have to argue with people to prove them wrong. You don’t have to convince everyone that your vision makes sense. Sometimes the best response is simply to keep building. Because your life is not a copy of someone else’s.
Your timing is different. Your opportunities are different. Your purpose is different.
And your story deserves the chance to unfold on its own—not according to someone else’s expectations, but according to the life you’re willing to create. Respect people’s experiences. Learn from their wisdom. But don’t inherit their limitations. Your reality is still being written.
