I Stopped Waiting to Feel Ready

For a long time, I thought readiness would arrive first, then I’d move. I waited to feel confident enough, prepared enough, certain enough. I told myself once everything made sense, I’d take the leap. But clarity never came the way I imagined it would. Instead, life kept nudging me forward while I stood still, waiting for permission I didn’t actually need.

What I eventually learned is this: readiness isn’t a feeling, it’s a decision.

Interestingly, there’s an old word used in the Bible…Sluggard. Even if you’re not religious, the concept itself is worth sitting with. A sluggard isn’t someone who lacks ability or potential. It’s someone who delays action. Someone who waits. Someone who overthinks movement until opportunity quietly passes by. That idea challenged me. Not because I felt judged, but because it forced me to ask myself an honest question: Am I waiting because I need time or because I’m avoiding the discomfort of starting? Every meaningful step I’ve taken came before I felt fully prepared. I moved while still unsure. I started while still learning. I trusted myself while still afraid. Not because I had all the answers, but because staying stuck felt heavier than trying. Waiting to feel ready kept me safe, but it also kept me small. Growth asked more of me than comfort ever could. It asked me to believe in the version of myself that didn’t exist yet. The one who would figure it out along the way. The one who would grow into the responsibility. The one who would rise because she chose to move, not because she felt fearless. There’s strength in action. Momentum in showing up. Confidence grows when you prove to yourself that you can handle what comes next, even imperfectly. So if you’ve been waiting for the “right time,” the perfect plan, or the fear to disappear, consider this your reminder: you don’t become ready first. You become ready by starting.
